A Lecture in Sports Psychology

The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Youth represented by the General Directorate of Sports Activities, carried out a lecture on sports psychology targeting a number of employees and workers in the sports sector, as well as those interested in people with disabilities. It was presented by the psychologist, Dr. Khaled bin Abbas Al-Yaroubi, in the lecture hall of Al-Amal Club.

Through the series of lectures that it presents in this field – within a set of awareness programs for people with disabilities – the Ministry seeks to touch and meet the needs of society in various aspects, and it also seeks to integrate different groups of people with disabilities with the rest of society.

In his lecture, Al Yarubi dealt with four axes, the first was the psychological preparation of athletes, defining it as helping the athlete to adapt to the situations and conditions of sports competition and the associated feelings of fear, tension, psychological anxiety and mistrust. Al Yarubi talked about the importance of psychological preparation before the competition and the role of the coach on the day of the competition in order for the player to remain fully focused before the start of the competition, thus ensuring a good result during the race.

In the second axis, Dr. Khaled dealt with the psychological hardness of the players and mentioned its characteristics, explaining that this is represented in the player having the ability to move in different directions; response; and strength; courage; the ability to handle errors; also, sportsmanship, and psychological toughness is important as it protects the athlete from the effects of life stressors and makes the player more flexible and optimistic and acts as a protection factor from physical diseases and psychological disorders for the player and also relieves the pressures facing the athlete.

As for the third axis, the lecturer dealt with psychological energy, which is a focused emotional charge that pushes and urges to achieve the goal and requires focus towards a certain direction. The concept of psychological energy is linked to three main terms: optimal psychological energy, psychological energy mobilization, and the collapse of psychological energy. While the fourth and final axis was about psychological sports leadership, which is defined as the process carried out by a member of an organized sports group, directing the behavior of individuals in order to push them with a sincere desire towards achieving a common goal among them. He added that there are three basic and necessary conditions for the existence of this leadership: the existence of a group linked to each other, the existence of a common common mission between them, and the existence of a difference or differentiation in the responsibilities entrusted to each individual.
